I have seen several Wood Storks at Village Creek Landing and have taken dozens of photographs of them. A large white bird with black feathers underneath and a long, tapered bill, they are the only storks in North America. The head and upper neck of the adult Wood Stork are bare. It has long legs which are good for wading in the marshes, swamps, and wetlands it calls home. Wood Storks have been on the endangered species list for many years due to habitat loss, but have recently been upgraded from “endangered” to “threatened”. There is still much work to do, however, to protect these unique birds.
