Look at this young Pied-billed Grebe and its reflection in the water. Cute, isn’t it? Unlike a duck’s bill which is flat, Pied-billed Grebes have a short, thick, rounded bill. It helps them crack open crustaceans. They are excellent divers and can stay under water for about thirty seconds. Some refer to them as part submarine. Basically a water bird, it is rare to see them in flight. They build their nests on the water and anchor them to existing vegetation. Pied-billed Grebes are often solitary and only occasionally will be seen in flocks. I photographed this one by itself at the Creek off Villager Drive on St. Simons Island.
