A relative of the thrashers, the Northern Mockingbird is an excellent mimic, often imitating many other bird species in the area. It can also mimic musical instruments, sirens, and dog barks. Amazing, isn’t it? During its lifetime, a mockingbird can learn up to 200 songs. It is grayish above and white below with a long tail and white wing patches visible in flight. They are fiercely protective of their nests, so do not approach them. The Northern Mockingbird is the only mockingbird in North America. Its diet consists of insects, berries, and seeds.
