Did you know that almost all domestic ducks are descended from Mallards? Well, they are, and what a handsome relative to have! This full-body shot of a male Mallard, called a drake, standing on a rock in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, gives us a good view of his many colors. Note the rusty chest and blue speculum, bordered in black and white, on his wing. His flanks are gray with a black tail, and his head is an iridescent green and blue with a broad yellow bill.
