What a pretty mallard pair! Mallards pair up in the fall and winter. The male stays with the female until she lays her eggs and then he moves on, leaving the female to incubate the eggs on her own. But while they are together, they make a very handsome pair. This photo, with the male and female standing side by side, highlights the bright blue speculums on their wings. The blue speculum is an identifying trait of the mallard duck.
