A small, stocky, hunched-back bird, the Green Heron doesn’t exactly resemble its stately cousin, the Great Blue Heron. At only 18-22 inches in size at adulthood, it is more than two feet shorter than the Great Blue. From a distance it looks like a very dark little bird, but after closer inspection, it is really quite colorful. The iridescent green color on its back often displays as a dull blue, which is the case in this photo taken at Village Creek Landing. Green Herons are actually very clever hunters, creating fishing lures with twigs and feathers to entice small fish to the surface.
