It is hard not to be mesmerized by the sight of a Great Blue Heron. Striking in both size and color, the Great Blue is the largest of the herons in North America, approximately four feet in height with a six foot wingspan. When foraging for food, they can stand motionless, almost like a statue, for long periods of time. Then with a sudden, fast thrust of its neck and head, it stabs its prey with its thick bill. I took this photo at Village Creek Landing and wanted to highlight the heron’s plumage, its strong blade-like bill, and yellow eye. Beautiful!
