Photo of Gould’s Inlet on St. Simons Island
Gould’s Inlet is the northern most point of East Beach on St. Simons Island. At low tide, you can actually walk from the pier down through East Beach and end up at Gould’s Inlet. It’s a good little hike, and there’s no telling what you might see along the way. If it’s high tide or you would rather just take your car, it is at the end of Bruce Drive. Gould’s Inlet was named after James Gould, who built the first lighthouse on the island in 1810. At Gould’s Inlet I have photographed several different kinds of egrets, fiddler crabs, and quite a variety of shore birds. Gould’s Inlet is also part of the Colonial Birding Trail and is a great place to visit when you are on the island.
