Female Purple Finches have none of the reddish coloring of the male. They are brown above and brown and white striped underneath with a white streak above the eye. Purple finches have a very pronounced notch in their tails which is evident in this photo. Purple Finches are 5-6 inches in length and have a strong conical beak that helps them to crack open seeds.
