A Dragonfly??!! O.K., I know it isn’t a bird, but as the final photo in the Backyard Bird Photography series, I wanted to illustrate that there are many other species which are regular visitors to your yard. Dragonflies, butterflies, fireflies, interesting insects, lizards, frogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and, depending on where you live, who knows what else. If you are going to photograph small subjects like dragonflies, however, you will need to become familiar with Macro Photography. A lot of digital cameras now come with a macro feature on them. Macro photography is when you photograph a very small subject and are able to enlarge it to see all the details. In this photo of the dragonfly, you are able to see its multifaceted eyes, its fascinating mouth, and the hair-like follicles on its legs. It would be difficult for any of these features to be visible to the naked eye, so macro photography allows us the opportunity to see them up close and personal.

An interesting fact: Most of the dragonfly’s head is made up of its eyes, each of which has thousands of lenses, giving them excellent vision everywhere except behind them.
