There’s nothing like a cool drink on a hot day. The Mute Swan’s long neck helps it to go well below the surface of the water to forage for aquatic plants, which make up a large part of its diet. These swans will also occasionally eat insects, worms, and small fish. Their nests are made primarily of plant material. The female builds a large mound with an indentation on top. She lays between five and ten eggs and does most of the incubation. The cygnets come popping out of their shells after about 36 days. Both parents tend to their young, and the babies will often be seen riding on the backs of mom and dad.
